But worst of all Sîan Phillipps as "Mother of the Bene Gesserit. Ok, she was wrinkled enough for this role in 1984, when she gave this. "Acting" wouldn´t be the right word, because, uuh: has she ever. No, she never has, let´s be sincere.
In fact, this was the coronation for one of the worst films I know. Even Prochnow wasn´t at his best - especially when he signed the contract for this ghastly trash.
You find me hard to please? Well, I am. How is it that after all this time, it still hasn't received the recognition it deserves?
A big budget science fiction epic crossed with the extreme ArtHouse vision of David Lynch in the early 80s when sci fi was still a relatively new genre, post Star Wars renaissance of only 7 years earlier. 84 was Sixteen Candles, Footloose and The Terminator.
No one was doing anything like Dune. Somehow Lynch managed to conjure the budget for this film with it's brilliant production design unique characterisation and creativity, not just in effects, but in dialouge and story. One of its boldests aspects is the internal dialogue of characters in their whispering tones. This is a very arthouse concept and yet it works within the realm of Dune. It's incredibly bold. Even an indie film would struggle to pull this off.
Some of it is over the top of course but that's the nature of Lynch and the story. Theres little to denigrate it. Patrick Stewart and Kyle Mchlanan are great. So is all the supporting cast. Sadly, Sting in particular is false.
Most of it still holds up today, other than a few green screen model effects shots, mostly because of its brilliant sets and production design.
The music is very powerful and is just as pertinent now than ever.
Many of its earliest critics compared it to the novel. A film is an entirely different beast. Yet Lynch captures its complexities and oddities.
It's not for everyone but there are aspects of this film that are timeless. I first saw it in late 84 on VHS as a teenager and I didn't understand it but I thought it was fascinating. Even today there is still elements that continue to enlighten and reveal. How many films can offer that gift?
Lambasted by many for far too long, it's time that we all reassessed Dune for the unique classic that it truly is.
Great performances by many of the sizable cast. Dean Stockwell, Sian Phillips, wife of Peter O'Toole. All really, except for Sting.
Mesmerizing 35 years on. Deserved of your analysis and praise to Lynch's superb and unique talent. Bold before belief.

Nice storyline,Star Wars esque environment but developments are very fast paced and needs bit of slowing down/time investment, maybe it d be better as mini series or set of movies ala Star Wars considering movie took 2hours 15 minutes?
